What is IMO number?

Individual number assigned to all ships when constructed. IMO - 3 letters plus 7 unique digits. The organization giving IMO numbers is IHS Fairplay.
Which ships should be registered? All sea-going merchant vessels of 100 gross tons and above. Example IMO 1963549. Thanks to this unique number you can track vessels and see their history. The tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001 and the terrorist attack, the IMO organized a Diplomatic Conference on Maritime Security 10 years ago. At the meeting, it was decided to enhance the security of vessels and port facilities. Each ship using IMO number is registered, with the time we have a list of ships classified by this unique number called IMO number.
The year of its appearance is 1987.
